How to Find a Real Barber in River North

Let me tell you something I've learned in seventeen years of cutting hair in this city. Most guys don't have a barber. They have a place they go when their hair gets too long. Those are two very different things.

River North makes it worse, not better. We got more grooming spots per block than almost anywhere in Chicago. Fancy chairs, good lighting, an app for everything. And plenty of them will charge you downtown prices for a cut that falls apart in five days. So if you just moved here, or you've been bouncing between shops hoping one sticks, this is what I'd tell you if you were sitting in my chair.

Consistency is the whole game

Anybody can give you one good haircut. One. The real question is what the fourth one looks like. And the tenth.

A real barber remembers how your hair grows. He knows you got that cowlick on the left side, that your beard runs thin at the jaw, that you like your fade a little higher in the summer. You shouldn't have to re-explain your own head every visit. When clients tell me they don't even look at the mirror afterward anymore, that's not them being careless. That's trust that got built one consistent cut at a time.

So here's a simple test. If you've been somewhere three times and each cut came out different, that's not a barber, that's a lottery ticket.

Look at how the shop handles time

Rushed shops give rushed cuts. Period. If the spot double-books, stacks walk-ins, and gets you out in twelve minutes, the details are getting skipped. The lineup gets eyeballed instead of razored. The fade gets close enough instead of clean.

I block real time for every appointment on purpose. A Signature Cut gets a consultation, the cut itself, a razor lineup, a hot towel, and styling. That doesn't fit in twelve minutes and I'm not going to pretend it does. When you're checking out a new spot, look at their booking page. If every service is fifteen minutes, that tells you everything.

Ask about texture before you sit down

This one matters and not enough people say it plain. A lot of shops are only comfortable with one kind of hair. Straight hair shops that panic on coils. Fade shops that butcher a scissor cut.

A real barber can cut everybody. Straight, wavy, curly, coily. Corporate looks and creative fades. I've cut every texture that ever walked into my suite and I adjust the tools and technique to the head in the chair, not the other way around. If you got textured hair and you're tired of leaving shops disappointed, ask one question before you book: "What's your experience with my hair type?" A real one answers specific. A pretender changes the subject.

Read the reviews, but read them right

Don't just look at the star number. Look for three things in the actual words:

• Years. "My barber for 13 years." "Been coming for 5 years." Long relationships mean consistency. Anybody can farm five stars off first visits.
• Names. When reviews name the barber and talk about him like a person, that's a relationship, not a transaction.
• Details. "He checked in the next day to make sure I was happy." You can't fake that kind of specific.

I'm at 5.0 on Google and 4.96 on Booksy across about 350 reviews, and I'm proud of that. But what I'm really proud of is how many of those reviews start with "I've been coming to Johnnie for years." That's the number that matters.

The private suite difference

I spent years in traditional shops. Great energy, and I love the culture, that's where I learned the craft. But I built my studio in River North as a private one-on-one suite for a reason. No crowd waiting on the bench watching you. No three conversations happening over your head. Just you, me, and forty focused minutes.

Some guys want to talk. Some guys had a long week and want to close their eyes and unplug. Both are welcome in my chair. Like I tell my clients, my chair is your reset button.
