Need a Cut Near the Loop? Read This First

A lot of my clients work in the Loop. Traders, lawyers, consultants, tech guys, guys who run crews downtown. Different jobs, same problem. Your haircut is part of your uniform, but finding time for it feels impossible, so you treat it like an errand. You squeeze it in wherever, whenever, with whoever has an opening.

Then you wonder why you never quite look the way you want to in the Monday meeting.

I've been cutting Chicago professionals since 2009, and my studio sits at 9 W Erie St in River North, about a ten minute ride from most of the Loop. Here's the system I tell every downtown guy who sits in my chair.

Stop booking haircuts. Start booking a schedule.

The biggest upgrade you can make costs nothing. Book your next appointment before you leave the chair, every time, on a fixed rhythm.

• Every 2 weeks: skin fades, bald fades, and anything with a hard lineup. That sharpness has a shelf life of about 10 to 14 days.
• Every 3 weeks: tapers, scissor work, most corporate cuts. The sweet spot for looking maintained without living in the chair.
• Every 4 weeks max: longer styles. Past a month, you're not maintaining a style anymore, you're starting over.

Guys on a standing schedule never have the "big event Thursday, no barber" panic. Their cut is always somewhere between fresh and clean, never overgrown.

The Loop worker's timing cheat sheet

My hours are built around working schedules, so let me be straight about when to come:

• Weekday evenings, Wed through Fri: I cut until 7 PM. The 5 and 6 PM slots go first every single week. If you want after-work, book a week out minimum.
• Midday Monday or Tuesday: my sleeper pick. I'm open 10 to 4 early in the week and it's quieter. A lunch-hour cut on a Tuesday means you're the freshest guy in the building the rest of the week.
• Saturday morning: I open at 9. First slots of the day never run behind.
• After hours: when work truly won't let go, I offer a VIP after-hours appointment. Private booking outside regular hours, same precision, on your schedule.

Getting here from the Loop is the easy part

The studio is inside Salon Lofts at Erie and State, two blocks from the Grand stop on the Red Line. From most of the Loop that's one train, no transfer, under 15 minutes door to door. Brown Line works too, get off at Chicago and it's a short walk. Driving? There's garage parking nearby and some street parking if you got luck on your side.

And because my suite is private and appointment-only, there's no bench full of walk-ins ahead of you. You come in at 12:30, you're in the chair at 12:30. That's the whole point.

What to ask for if your job has a dress code

If you're client-facing, tell your barber two things: how formal your workplace runs, and how much time you're willing to spend on your hair in the morning. The answer is usually zero, and that's fine, but say it.

A good corporate cut should survive a 7 AM workout, a helmet-free bike commute, and a 6 PM client dinner without product surgery in between. That's a structure question, not a styling question, and it gets decided by how the cut is built. It's exactly what the consultation at the start of every one of my appointments is for.

One last thing

Your barber should make your life easier, not add another chore to it. Find someone consistent, get on a schedule, and stop thinking about it. That's what my longest clients figured out years ago. Some have been with me over a decade, and I promise you they spend less time worrying about their hair than the guys still bouncing between shops.
